Rules question. Today at the game there was a fly

  • ball hit to Marzilli in center. He lost it in the sun and missed it. My brother sat next to me and said it was an error. I said, no it's not, he didn't touch the ball and therefore an error can't be called. My brother laughed at me and said "take a look at the score board." Sure enough, an error was posted.

Am I wrong on that rule, or did they give him an error for missing the ball because of the sun? Or, did I miss the fact that he touched the ball on the play?

Or, was there an earlier error that we forgot about, and that was the reason there was an error on the board--it was from an earlier error?

    Thanks.

He didn't touch the ball. If a fly ball should be caught, and it's missed, sun or otherwise, it can be rule an error. In my opinion, it was correctly ruled.

There is no rule that an error can't be given if the fielder doesn't touch the ball. Often, official scorers will use that as a guide though. Your brother was right this time, but more times than not, you would've been right.

Thanks to both of you for your answers. I stand corrected. I don't have to tell my brother. He was sure I was wrong.

I was talking to another brother (big family) tonight and he assured me I was wrong as well.

  • Yeah, you can definitely take your approach and be correct most of the time. For example, when the catcher, 3B and pitcher let the pop-up drop between them this wknd, it was ruled a hit, although it "should have been caught". USUALLY, official scorers use that rule of untouched ball (as others said earlier). However, Zilli seemed to semi-track it and lost it by a very short margin. I think it was correctly called too, in this case.

I lean toward the popup being an error on the third baseman. He was the one that should have called it and made the catch. Funny that when a ground ball goes through an infielder's legs you hardly ever hear anyone say "base hit, he never touched it " .

I agree. I know the hows and why but I can't justify that being a hit. And yes the 3rd baseman should have made the play.

  • This is one of the few things I can think of in competitive sports that's totally subjective. You see some interesting things sometimes from scorers seemingly depending on if the defensive team is home or away and the game situation. For instance, a ball that may normally be ruled a hit is ruled an error and, oh by the way, the home team's pitcher has given up no hits through 5 innings. Or the exact same ball hit to Marzilli is instead hit by a Gamecock and the scorer rules it a hit. Always interested to see if a H pops up or an E on the scoreboard.
