So what we look like next year, never too early

  • I like Jordan Montgomery to take over the Friday night role. I like Holmes in the Sunday role as he has always seemed to pitch best in that role. Saturday is up for grabs, could be Koumas, Beal, Seddon, Webb, or a new guy.
Lineup, we will be better in right field with Costen taking over. He can really hit but he will have to work on his fielding. I think we will improve at 2nd, ss, 3rd, and catcher just due to experience and an off season to get stronger.
Really going to suffer at 1st base compared to what we have had. We will be weaker in centerfield from a fielding standpoint considerably, but no suffering with the bat as English will get better there. The only position I see up for grabs is left or right if Costen goes to left. Seth constable was a great high school player so it will be interesting to see if he recovers from his leg injury. He adds another speed merchant to the lineup.

  • Offensively, we need a 3 and 4 hitter. We used a 5/6 hitter at clean-up this year out of necessity. We used an 8/9 hitter at 5 because he's apparently a nice guy. That allowed teams to pitch around Walker, as illustrated by his Omaha record for walks in a CWS.

We will be better in RF, weaker in Center defensively, and have a gaping hole at first.

  • Other than replacing our best post season pitcher ever, our best closer ever, and the guy with the most hits in CWS history, we got no worries lol.

We've replaced some incredible players over the course of the last decade: Roberts, Everett, Bouknight, Bauer, Barber, Pearce, Smoak, Darnell, Havens, Meyer, Cooper, etc etc etc. We have such an outstanding program with outstanding coaches that we continue to reload. I'm concerned that we may be due for one of those seasons that sometimes bites great programs when they suffer from the graduation of many stars. However, I think the growth we saw from our freshmen this season should prevent that from happening next season.

  • We won't be weaker defensively in center. Trust me on this. You'll be amazed at Tanner in center. We may be better overall next year. In 2014 we will be unreal.

I'm amazed at your lack of respect for Tanner. I agree with you that Matthews shouldn't have been in the 5 hole, but you can find a way to insult Tanner with every piece of criticism you convey on here. I know you don't really think Tanner would stick a guy in a spot if he felt he had a better option, so I'm not sure why you would say it, other than just trying to be cute.

  • Reload. I would like to see what Kyle Martin does with a full season of at bats if he earns them in the fall/early spring.

  • Unfortunately our freshmen really swung the bats poorly in Omaha. Martin looked ok, but English, Pankake, and Greiner really struggled after having quality seasons for the most part. Greiner must stop his front hip from flying open so he can use the entire field in th future. English must hit the ball on the ground and reduce his strikeouts. Pankake, much like Greiner, has trouble letting the ball travel. He looked like a solid 3 hole hitter at times this season but he also had some stretches where he looked like a bottom of the order guy. I don't know if the pressure got to them, or if the pitching was just that much better than we normally see, or maybe they just wore down from a long season. However, these guys are going to need to show major improvement in order to replace the production we saw from Marzilli, Walker, and to a lesser extent, Matthews.

    +1.

I think we will be fine next year. The freshman have gotten a lot of experience, they grew up really fast over the course of the year and have now tasted Omaha. I think they will step up even more and show their mettle.

If I have any concern about next year's team it will be leadership. Carolina has really been blessed the last 3 years with players who lead by word and action. That maybe hard to replace after this year but we shall see.

If you "agree that Matthews shouldn't have been in the 5 hole", does that mean you don't have any respect for Coach Tanner either? It is possible to disagree with a decision while still respecting the person making the decision.

Yes it is possible and you know it is. Not a game goes by that I don't disagree with him about several things but I freely admit that a man who has led his team to three straight CWS championship series knows more than I do about coaching baseball. Instead of saying you disagree with him, you crack that he hit Matthews fifth because he's a nice guy. Either you're just kidding or you're a complete moron. Either way it's unnecessary to disrespect either of them.

Pitching: Webb/Montgomery/Holmes/Beal/Koumas/Belcher/Seddon/Wynkoop/Britt plus lots of others. Hopefully Drake Thomason can regain his velocity.

Unbelievable, taking a shot at a guy on his way out the door. Class, pure class. Stuff like this is what everyone says makes jawja and clempsun fans so bad. I cannot believe some of the stuff I read sometimes.

Insulting the best coach in the country, and taking a shot at a senior on his way out the door? C'mon, man, we are better than that.

Dantzler was hitting behind Walker, and was one of the hottest hitters in the CWS. No matter the situation, nobody is going to give Walker pitches right down the middle. They are going to nibble, and he does what he should if they don't throw strikes.

You cannot replace a Christian Walker, you just don't. Martin needs to show some power, because Tanner wants power at that spot. We will see if Martin can do it. I imagine Celek will get some opportunities. Personally, I like Martin.

I think by the end of next year, we will again be saying that we have the best CF in the country. English is a special talent.

I think Greiner hits 10-14 HR next year, with some time in the weight room, that dude is going to have scary power.

Not that you were insinuating this, but I don't see how anyone is taking the SS job away from Pankake. It ain't happening. That dude has come so far this year, and that bazifle of his, man! I could watch him throw seeds from the hole all day long. He has a big league arm.

We are not going to be as good defensively in RF. Matthews made some unbelievable plays out there this year. The catch last night was Marzilli-like, and his arm out there was quite an asset. He improved quite a bit on the defensive side of things in his career. That is a testament to the young man's work ethic.

I also feel good about Dantzler coming back. His batting avg is going to be significantly better next year.

  • I rarely agreed with the commentators in Omaha, but they mentioned something that I found interesting (besides Pankake eating Pancakes on National Pancake Day). Do you see a move for GG in the coming future to first base? They talked about his knee troubles that he had, i'm not sure it was related to catching, but the two may be correlated somehow, but do you think a move is possible. I have trouble giving up a great catcher, but if it prolongs someones career, i'm cool with that.

Pankake will be the SS unless Corey Seager surprises and comes to school.

I'm thinking he'll get a long hard look on the mound in the fall. If he is going to be a contributor there Tanner will find a spot other than SS to play him.
