Summer league info ...

  • Here's a list of where guys are going this summer to play baseball. These probably won't change, but a few could be added:

Tanner English – Cape – Harwich
Connor Bright – CPL – Florence
Joel Seddon – CPL – Columbia
TJ Costen – CPL – Thomasville
Joey Pankake – CPL – Forest City
Drake Thomason – CPL – Forest City
Vince Fiori – Cal Ripken League – Baltimore RedBirds
Erik Payne – CPL – Columbia
Kyle Martin – CPL – Florence
Josh Knab – CPL – Columbia
Grayson Greiner - USA National Team

As you may or may not know, the guys who pitch a lot during the season are encouraged to take the summer off to rest their arms. Most juniors do not play and either go through the draft process or stay in Columbia and work in the weight room and cages at Carolina Stadium. There could be a few more players placed over the course of the next few weeks, but this is what we have at the moment.

  • Do players have to be on rosters to play in summer leagues? If not, could Shon Carson possibly play until football started?

They can still play. I doubt they will. I'm sure they'll participate in spring football practice though.

  • Whittle, what/who determines where they play summer ball?

Combination of player and USC coaches. The players express an interest on where they want to go and what they want to do. The USC coaches try to make it happen.

The CPL is the Coastal Plains League ... It's the league that has the most teams in the surrounding area. Lots of USC players typically hang around this league year in and year out. The opinions on the league vary depending on who you talk to.

The Cape Cod League is widely regarded as the best summer league out there.

There's no inter-league play that I'm aware of. All the CPL teams play each other, Cape teams play each other, etc.

Yes. Just amateurs. College baseball players. I'm not sure if there is a minimum age, but typically current college players. There have been a few rising college freshmen who have talked about playing but I don't know off hand if that's possible or not. Guys drafted can play. Guys who have signed can not.
