The little dugout dust-up ...

  • A bunch of folks have asked about on this message board and on Twitter about the little dugout dust-up after Forrest Koumas was removed from the game. As was mentioned on the radio, there was a little bit of a verbal exchange in the dugout. It's being grossly overblown, not so much by Andy, but just in terms of the amount of questions and comments about it.

Basically, emotions were running high Michael Roth said something in the heat of battle. For those who have been in dugouts, locker rooms, or wherever participating in a competitive environment, those things happen. Those things are rarely heard about and stay within the team. As any broadcaster would do, Andy was describing the action and what he saw. I'm sure he probably hated it has caused all these questions.

The team got together and used those emotions as a rallying point for the rest of the game. Roth had some words and the team broke out to score 10 runs over the next three innings and defeat a team two out of three games that I, honestly, didn't think it would beat in the series. This team has won 12 of 13 SEC games and the cohesion in the dugout has not been higher at any point this season.

  • Thanks Whittle, I've been wondering what happened. To me it seems like we have a bunch of guys who are ultra competitive and want nothing more than to win ball games. I'm starting to like this team alot more as this season goes on. Lot of strong personalities, but at the same time superior leadership. Will take us a long way as we go forward.

  • Why didn't you think the defending national champions with 11 straight SEC wins would win this series ?

Sounds like something I would read on Baseball America's website.

Because Arkansas is doggone good and winning anywhere on the road in the SEC is tough especially Arkansas where it seems like none of our teams ever play well. We swept them in 2010 out there and I believe that was our first series win there in years at that point. Those 11 straight wins came against the bottom third of the conference. With a TBA Saturday starter against Baxendale and them having overall one of the best staffs in the nation, I too thought we'd have a very tough time winning the series. Most anyone without garnet glasses on would...tremendous effort by the Gamecocks.

The only names you mentioned were Koumas and Roth, so I assuming the words were between those two? I know it's no big deal and I also know those are probably the two toughest competitors on the team, so it would make sense to me.

  • On the radio it sounded like it was Holbrook and Roth.

    Blitzer

  • I would assume that Holbrook stepped in to break it up / settle it down

  • It happened Before Forrest was pulled and right before Myer headed to the mound as I recall.

  • Okay, so I am still waiting for someone to explain what happened. I was not able to watch or listen to any of the games this past weekend.

Me too. I know we shouldn't "want" to know but I do because I am happy that things like that go down. Like MCR mentioned, i loved watching Morales get after it in the dugout.

Just to clear the air, it happened before Koumas got to the dugout; so it happened with Roth and someone else.

  • What do you want me to tell you? Roth and Beal exchanged a few words. Holbrook got between them. That's it.

Did Beal pull the ole shaving cream on ball cap trick with Roth or did he wipe a booger on Roth's sleeve?

I knew nothing at all. I just wanted to know what happened. I was told this morning that some of our players had an altercation with some Arkansas fans. I pay money here to get correct info, so why should I feel in the wrong for asking???????

  • They were arguing over who got to feed the fish.

It was a minor verbal exchange in the dugout that has been blown out of proportion. I thought the initial post, minus Beal's name, explained what happen well enough. Content of arguments typically stay within the team.
