This CWS really is not fun to watch

  • I have a very hard time watching games that don't involve us this season. Last night I just turned it off after about 5 innings. The combination of bats, the new park, and the prevailing wind direction have turned this into a walk and bunt contest. 99% of the time that the leadoff guy gets on, he's bunted down. The HR is basically gone from the game. The main drama we have watched is pitchers cracking under pressure and walking too many people. I'll stay interested in college baseball no matter what, but if they are trying to make college baseball fans out of the guys that only tune in for the CWS it's never going to happen with this product. Unless they change the field dimensions to balance out what the bat has taken away, I'm predicting a declining trend in the ratings going forward.

  • I'm about the biggest baseball fan I know and I can't watch it. It's boring and predictable. I would rather watch the Braves.

    MCR

  • I agree. If we weren't in this CWS I doubt I would have watched any of it. The fans of the other bracket had to feel that way about our game with Ark. It's a shame it's so boring. All that being said, I hope we go on a 5 game boring as hell win streak!

IMO, that is the reason something needs to be done in the very near future or the the prestige and "event" of the CWS will begin to decline. It has become such a huge revenue maker and the NCAA should take action to protect themselves in that regard. Over time, it could also decrease attendance at the individual schools as well if nothing is done. College baseball has become a much more popular sport and I would hate to see that trend reversed.

  • They should have never left Rosenblatt. That was the icon of college baseball -- it was a Wrigley/Fenway type of ballpark, something you renovate, not destroy.

Now it looks too generic. And the dead bats, of course, make it so dull to watch a game where a comeback is so rare.

  • I agree too, and I used to watch EVERY CWS game. Most of the games, including our Arkansas game have been very boring.

I think this may hurt the popularity of the game. They made TDP waaaay too big, particularly with the new bats.

  • I am a fan of pitching and defense and not a fan of 17-12 kind of baseball games. I would remind you all that what the game has become and the type team Ray has assembled is a big reason we ran off 22 staright in the post season.

We also had 3 run bombs from Christian Walker that decided game 2 of our supers the 2 previous years. We also won the 1st game of the 22 in a row with a bunch of HR's vs. ASU. I'm not proposing going back to 15-12 games but it would be nice to see more than just pitching, defense, bunts and occasional 2 out hits in a few games.

    Pretty much this.

Statistically speaking, if you assume every hitter in the lineup is a .300 hitter , the chances of stringing together 3 consecutive hits is 2.7%. Since only 2 of the guys in our lineup are above .300, the chances of 3 straight hits are statistically less. Obviously, if one of those hits is for extra bases, you could score with 2 hits, but the youre still talking about a 9% chance. Factor in only 6 HR total had been hit in the hundreds of combined AB thus far, and it makes for a very boring game.

I feel like essentially eliminating the HR would be like eliminating long TD passes in football. This is why the casual fan tunes in, and you need that display of power and athleticism in both sports.

  • They went way to far with the bats. I am not saying where they were 3 years ago was right either, but we could and should find the middle road. College ball is a great product, but would be better if we brought the "ping" back.

  • Seems to me the reason they changed the bats was to give the Stoney Brooks of the world a chance...the good quality matchups we had prior to the bats changing against the SEC programs, Clemson, etc. were lower scoring games. Occasionally you would have a 9-8 game, but that happens in MLB daily. The scores got out of hand against poor pitching...a typical everyone gets a trophy move by the NCAA...just my theory

I'm not sure that argument holds too much water. Fresno State won for just the opposite reason. They were using (rolled) composite bats and won because they hit a ton of home runs. They were a 4 seed and they won the whole thing.

Agreed. I think they went overboard with the current bats.

  • i can see both sides of this argument. personally, i enjoy the game as it is now. with respect to the bats, i think the metal bat should mirror the wooden bat - just don't see why the pro and college games should be so dramatically different.

The college game as it was before BBCOR was a better and more exciting game than MLB. I don't watch MLB and haven't since the last strike.

Yay! False dilemma! 17-12 smash ball or 2-1 bunt-fest are the only options!

There is plenty of room for pitching and defense with slightly more offense. The old bats were bad because they almost completely removed huge elements of baseball from the results. The combination of the new bats with a cavernous park have almost removed an entirely different element of the game. Pitchers do not get punished for mistakes like they should, so the new park actually depresses the effect of strong pitching.

Exactly, pitchers know they just need to throw strikes with a lead because even if a ball is hit fair the percentages are in the pitcher's favor that an out will be made.

If the bats are exactly equal, you are still going to see a different game. The pros are generally mature men (your strength peaks at 25) who are much stronger than college players. And the pitchers generally throw harder. The result is that when solid contact is made with a wood bat, it goes a lot farther than it normally would in a college game.

The ball is also wound a little tighter.
