Top 8 seed needs report

Boyd says we need to go no worse than 9-4 for a top 8 seed. I doubt that means we could lose 4 to just any of our remaining opponents and still make it. He lists 17 teams that still have a shot. 7 of those can lose only 1 or 0 games the rest of the way, 3 teams can only lose 2 and one can only lose 3. USC, LSU & Baylor can lose 4. Vandy, FSU & Fla seem to be home free. I like our chances but we need to win today and win our 2 remaining mid-week games. We could lose the series (1-2) at Ark and just win the series against Ga and LSU and make it if all this holds up. Of course a little help from some of our competitors for that last slot would certainly help.

  • I assume you mean UCLA or Baylor, instead of Vandy. Or Kentucky.

  • I think you meant ucla, not vandy, when listing teams that are basically in as national seeds.

Edit...whoops Irmo, you beat me to it.

  • That Georgia series is going to be huge imo, need to get 2 out of 3 there....a sweep would be great!

  • That report is just to finish with a top 8 RPI. That does not mean the top 8 RPI teams will be National Seeds.

"... the committee is highly unlikely to just take the top 8 in RPI for the national seeds, ..."

We need to finish 1st or second in the SEC to secure a National seed, and we may sneak in if we finish third, and have a very good RPI.

I agree 100% but I can't see the 2 time defending national champs who can sell 8,242 tickets to every game getting left out if we are in the top 8 of the RPI.

  • Also keep in mind Kentucky stills plays Florida

I think the winner of our series with Lsu gets a seed

    iopgamecock1

  • I think Kentucky will be the odd man out. They don't sell tickets and kind of the new kid on the block. This is assuming they don't win the SEC

    iopgamecock1

  • The SEC has 4 teams currently in the race for a national seed. It is highly unlikely that the SEC gets 4 top 8 seeds. The SEC will likely get 3 national seeds.

Right now FSU is a lock as are UF and UK.

That leaves 5 spots left. I think they will give the Pac 12 one between Stanford and UCLA(to give the west coast a seed). BA seems to think it will be UCLA.

Baylor is close to a lock as well as they are now 18-0 in conference.

Now we are down to 3 spots between Texas AM, LSU, SC, UNC(BA loves the ACC), Purdue, Oregon, Rice, Cal St Fullerton, NC State, Arizona.

I just dont see the ACC and Pac-12 getting more than 1 national seed this year. Both conferences are down. FSU has dominated the ACC this year. UNC has a great RPI but they are only 13-8 in conference play. Arizona and Oregon are both doing well in Pac-12 play but with the bottom feeders beating up on each other, it looks like the Pac-12 might only get 6 teams in the postseason(the others are squarely on the bubble).

Rice is doing well in Conference USA but they dont even lead the conference yet. I dont think they can get a national seed if they dont win thier conference. If UCF wins the conference, they should host but I think they are too low in the RPI to be a national seed.

To me I think right now the national seeds are FSU, UF, UK, Baylor, Texas AM, UCLA(or another team from the Pac-12), LSU, and SC. That does not give a lot of national seeds out west but you shouldnt give national seeds away if they are not earned. I think Stanford, UCLA and Oregon will all host but only one should be a national seed. Purdue will host but they dont have a good enough resume to be a national seed.

  • I think the SEC will only get two National seeds.

Some people nationally are still bitching that we got 3 last season, but as I recall all of us were in the top 5 nationally.

Do we deserve 3, absolutely, perhaps more than 3 but the NCAA will continue to try and "balance" out the National seeds. It also hurts us that another southeast conference, the ACC will get two or more seeds, that makes 4-6 from the same region of the country.

    Cain57

  • I think they send two out west somehow. ucla and Stanford

I agree with acc only getting one with that being Fsu

Florida, USC and Lsu or Kentucky. I think the SEC gets 3

Baylor gets one and one smaller team like rice if they win out

    iopgamecock1

  • National Seeds will be 2 out west(UCLA, Oregon, Stanford, Arizona, Cal St Fullerton are the ones in contention)
Purdue will get 1 to give the central one
The rest will be in the South. UK and UF will get one. LSU and/or USC will get the 3rd(or 4th) from the SEC.
FSU will get one to give the ACC thier only national seed
Baylor will get one so Texas can have a national seed.

In this case, that would give the SEC 3 national seeds which I think everyone can agree on.

  • The committee loves UNC (for some reason I do not understand) and they also love Georgia Tech (who screwed us out of National seeds on more than one occasion), Miami, and Virginia...

UNC has series left with Va Tech, Duke and BC, so they will likely finish very strong.

Ga Tech, Miami and Virginia all finish with each other, so they are unlikely to improve their conference standings.

UCLA has a very strong RPI but they are third in their conference, so they will be interesting to watch.

I agree that UK and Florida are locks, and that we are battling with LSU, and maybe Arkansas if they make a late run and sweep some folks, for that third SEC spot....

    Cain57

  • Don't forget our RPI should go up if we win the next three series. UGA is the lowest rated, but Arky is top 20 and LSU top 10.

I don't agree that UK and Florida are locks. They are probably in good shape. But if you go look at Warren Nolan after todays games we are ahead of Kentucky in RPI. If they start losing in conference that OC schedule will kill them. And Florida will have to win to hold that seed. They are in 4th place in the SEC right now.

I think the SEC is in good shape to get 2 seeds. But there are 4 teams still with a chance to earn those 2 spots. If we win our series we will get one.

  • Thx PC I'll check out that link...

Florida has a much higher SOS than most folks so they are a lock to stay in the top 8 RPI, but I agree if they fall apart it will be tough for the selection committee to put a 4th or 5th place SEC team as a National seed.

Florida has played some quality OC games. That will help them. They are in good shape as long as they win. But they could still miss out on a seed.

The next 3 weeks are huge. We have some challenges ahead. If we take care of them I believe we deserve a seed. If we don't win some games then we don't.

  • I follow Boyd's World regularly. Yes, Florida is a "lock", but if they go 0-11-- do you really think they will be a top 8 seed? I think if we can go 6-3 in SEC play we're a top 8, less than that doubtful.
