Whittle? Wingo...

  • His stats in the minors so far have been very good. He's already a plus plus fielder, and at a major league level, but the big question will be his bat. His OBP last year was .477, and while early he's at a .500 clip this season. Wingo has an amazing eye, and we all know about he gets hit by pitches...Do you think he has a real shot at the bigs? He could be a good one.

  • I think he definitely has a shot. In fact, I'd be surprised if he doesn't get a shot at some point. I think he'll at least get a cup of coffee, so to speak. I don't know that he'll have staying power. I'm not saying he doesn't, I just don't know that he does. We all love Scott for his willingness to get on base by wearing one, but he's not going to make it to the bigs on HBPs. You have to hit. He knows that. It's nice to have a good OBP, but it's nicer and you move quicker by working walks, keeping strikeouts down, and hitting it a little bit. Scott is going to be fine. I think he keeps moving on up the ladder and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if he's the first CWS championship-era player to make it to the show.

His 38 walks compared to 33 ks in a small sample size is amazing.

There are a lot of utility players in the majors that hit 230-250 that can play defense. I'm not sure what Adam Everretts career average was but he had a steady job in the majors for a lot of years because of his glove.

If Wingo gets the chance he will make it. His glove is amazing. He does not have to hit 300 to be a MLB player.

  • The competition is so great though. Its hard to be a everyday player for a long amount of time without hitting. But he could draw a nice paycheck being a Rafael Belliard type if nothing else

  • Well, I'm assuming most scouts and even GMs watch the CWS finals, perhaps more. If so then they all saw Wingo dominate with his glove and range. I watch a lot of baseball and Wingo's defense is with the elite in MLB. if he can maintain a .250 average when his number is called then he will retire a major leaguer.

That's exactly my feelings on it. Even in Scott's early years at Carolina his avg was never good, but his obp was. If Scott could be a .250-.350-.700 type player in the bigs, he'd last a long time with his fielding.
