Who's your Cinderella for 2012's field of 64 ?

  • Every year I like to pick a school that may be under the radar somewhat or might be jelling at the right time despite poor play earlier in the year, and see where they end up. Last year I picked Dallas Baptist who won their regional by beating TCU, Oklahoma, and Oral Roberts, but lost in the Super to Cal.

This year I have a feeling about # 4 seed Stony Brook. I know it's crazy to pick a 4 seed but I like to see the little guys show their stuff on a bigger field sometimes. They have some good team stats:
    .337 batting avg.
    .980 fielding %
    .415 ob%
    .486 slugging %
    88-119 stolen base
    .287 era

    Who's your pick?

I am going to go out on a limb and say Kentucky wins their regional, Oregon loses to Fullerton and thus Kentucky gets to host a regional!

  • I'll take Louisville, but watch out for Pepperdine to make a run this year.

That would be great for Kentucky if that happened.

I was about to say I can't pick one, but I have several I'll be keeping my eye on. Two are Louisville and Pepperdine, but I will also mention Central Florida and Samford. I am not suggesting that these teams will win the whole thing, but I think they all have a good chance to make it to Omaha. I think one of the most exciting things in college sports is when a true dark horse makes it to the CWS. Unfortunately we were the victim once when ULaLa made it, but Fresno State was a real longshot and they won the whole thing. Looking further back, there have been some other excited underdog runs to Omaha like Creighton in 1991, The Citadel in 1990, Kansas in 1993, and going way back to 1986 you had Indiana State, Maine, and Loyola Marymount at the same time.

Yeah I really enjoy a good underdog team, Cal was fun to watch last year with their program in jeopardy. Fresno St. was incredible with their run as a #4 seed to win it, I was definitely rooting for them in the tourny. I don't believe there are any dark horses with the pitching this year to take the title, but that's the thing about underdogs, you never really expect it.

  • I think Florida State has easily the toughest regional and whoever gets out of that will should feel really good about their accomplishment. I think Mississippi could really make some noise. I'd say Charleston, but they've got to get their defense together. Pitching is a strength, but it's going to be hard for anyone to beat Florida.

  • If Mississippi State's arms stay fresh after last week they will come out of Tallahassee then proceed to take care of the Stanford regional winner and move on to Omaha.

  • On the radio this morning Tommy Moody was talking about Army. He said this is the best team they have ever had. It would be really cool to see a military school make a run!

  • Well now...the little engine that could,Stony Brook, embarrasses the Canes and the selection committee with their 10-2 win at Coral Gables. Let's see how they do with today's matchup with UCF.

I like the way Samford swings the bats. They battered Stratton yesterday, and they beat Florida in the final week of the regular season. I am glad we don't play Samford. Offense doesn't normally win out, but they can certainly make it exciting.

Army has some serious pitching. Glad we don't have to play them either.

I am going with Samford as my dark horse.

Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.

  • Cinderella is making some noise at the ball.Stony Brook is giving LSU all they want and then some. They lost in 12 innings in the 1st game with small miracles in the 9th,10th, and 11th innings by LSU. Now they are up 3-0 on Gausman and company in the 2nd game.

thanks...love to see the no names get some publicity. I think at one point that they were projected for our regional. I wonder if they can pull off the upset ?

  • This might be the best prediction in the history of The Big Spur, much credit.

I hope you have a bookie. Great call. Little Stoney Brook brings down the loud mouth, obnoxious LSU team and fans.
