after matthews went hitless this weekend...

  • someone on here is going to go ahead and call for his head so I'll go first...

I would like to see a combination of English (speed), Marzilli (2 rings on his fingers and he's a stud), and Costen (i think his upside is gonna be good once he gets a chance). I would say Payne after his day today but not sure if can play the outfield.

Lastly, anyone have an updated Matthews batting average? I really feel for him because you know his senior season coming back and all he wanted to knock the leather off the ball this season.

  • Matthews was hitting .202 before his last bat which was an out. I appreciate all Matthews has done but it is time for him to sit and relax a bit. A senior playing the outfield and barely scratching .200 isn't winning baseball. The only starting player this weekend with no hits and only one quality at bat today.

Hopefully after sitting he can come back because we do need a Matthews that can at least give us.250 when he comes back. Good luck to him.

  • At one point he was our leading hitter for ave. in SEC play.

  • Tanner knows what he's doing

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I am all out of bubble gum.

  • I don't think you make changes to a team that has won eight straight SEC games and 10 of 12 ... especially when there's not a clear-cut better option.

    Agreed!

  • No non-conference this week but if Matthews struggles in the Bama series it would probably be a good idea to sit him vs. Davidson. Maybe having the a few extra days to get some cage work in will help him vs. Bama.

That has been my point from the start of this weeks ago. We are playing pretty well right now. No need to make changes right now.

We don't have a better option in the outfield and we are winning. And while Adam's batting average is not where anybody wants it to be (Adam included) he is still a captain and someone the guys look up to. And he does play pretty good RF for us. I have seen many players come into Carolina Stadium and lose it in that sun. He has made the plays for us.

I feel pretty confident that if a change needs to be made Ray Tanner will make it. He has done it in the past.

And I am not sure it really matters this year but Adam Matthews has two rings on his hand also.

  • Matthews is having a horrible year but he's still a senior and he's not going to panic. If there was a clear-cut better option, we would've seen it by now. I think we're better off having him in the game 6 or 7 innings and if we need to sub someone else in, do it late.

  • I only got on him when I didn't think he hustled a few times. As for the hitting and the overall season he's having, or not having, I just feel bad for the kid. Came back and then puts up these kind of numbers. Hope he pulls out of it.

My sentiments as well Postal, plus you don't bench a captain...no matter what imo. I seem to remember this skinny kid from Mauldin a little while back that hit .247 his junior year and led the team in strikeouts. You just never know how things finish out...especially in baseball.

From Demetra...he makes a good point...

You see Adam Matthews was 0-11 vs. AU. I see Matthews was 4-7 (.571) in Success Advancing Runners. USC season avg.: .513. Productive outs.

I was gonna say give him to next week where he'll be back at home. I'll bet a bottom dollar none of yall saw him hittin sub .200 forty games into his senior season. What round was he drafted last year btw??

Curious because i thought i knew, but do successful sacrifices count as an at bat?? Kind of like a walk doesnt...

Drafted in the 22/23 round not sure. No type of sacrifices count as an ab. They neither help or hurt your average.

Coming into this weekend, he had the second or third highest batting average in SEC games on our team (Moody said that Saturday).

That might be scariest thing I've ever heard seeing how he is batting .199

I'm rooting for him, trust me. Imagine if he could get the average near .250 consistently. Big difference in .250 and .199 especially when our team doesn't always swing the bats like the Yankees and Tigers (Detroit, haha) can.

    scottusc03

  • I'm a big believer in putting the best players on the field regardless of whether they are captains, privates, seniors or freshmen. If Costen was playing better I would say sit Matthews and play Costen. I haven't seen Costen pushing anyone but then I haven't seen Costen get much playing time. I trust the coaches.

I do like Matthews in the lineup as I always expect him to have a good at bat. Doesn't happen as much as I would like but...

That is in SEC play. His avg includes all out of conference games. Until this weekend, he was hitting pretty well against the SEC. He often has his best performances against the best pitching.

Averages normally will come out in the end. When it starts going right for this young man, look out. Talent is a no-brainer with the guy. Work ethic, leadership, and just overall quality of character will make it very, very hard to sit him. Aside from any real competition at this point.
