  • WG,

Are you going to give us any reports on what is happening in the summer workouts? Any info would be welcome.

If I get anything worth passing along I will certainly do it however there is usually not much to pass along. For example, right now none of the freshman are on campus.

I will have it in detail tomorrow in a insider report however his high school has not finished the semester yet so there is no way of knowing if the score he got back will be good enough. USC gave him a number based on how things have been going that he needed to get to and if he does well in the classroom this semester his latest score should be good but we will have to wait and see.

Right now, I think South Carolina is in very good shape for both. The Gamecocks would also likely take both at this moment.

I read that Kris Jenkins had surgery on his hand. You know anything about that?

I know he was injured, I had not heard about surgery but I doubt it is anything serious.

  • Now that Harris and Gill have made their decisions, I would like your opinion on their time at USC and the future. They both received rave reviews this spring on the transfer circuit, with some saying they were 1st All-Conf players. I saw each with a good skill set, but both lacked consistency, focus and toughness IMO.

  • My take. Both are solid complimentary players. As long as they are expected to be cogs in the wheel they should be successful. I personally think Gill has more upside on O and Harris mor on D. They are both quality players. Neither are what you'd call physical players and in that way, were not terribly good fits for Martin's system.

martin is recruiting man sized players. Horn recruited players 20+ lbs lighter in may instances.

Prince PG 6'2'' 190 grew up in NYC. will be a savy PG with some socring ability.
Hall SF 6'5'' 200 adds badly needed scoring ability. When will he be the starter????
6'8'' Lithuanian 215 excellent shooter. Will get better with experience
7' Lithuanian 250 physical presence in the paint. Not a shot blocker. good shooter.

Not sure we are done yet. Dickerson would have been nice but appears headed elsewhere.
Thornwell and Jenkins would be great fits (IMO) in Martin's system. Hopefully we can find room for the 6'9'' big from Miami that's so versitile.

I am really curious to see what the talent level is of our returning players. Martin is hands down a better coach than Horn. We will play much better defense. We will value the ball. We will work the ball inside and get baskets or foul shots.

Be more efficient on offense and tough on defense. Soce 6 to 8 more per game. Allow 6 to 8 less a game. That's the formula for an 81 - 20 games win season.

Gill is a player that I was never as high on as others. Now I think he has a chance to be solid but I am not sold on his perimeter skill and question if he is athletic enough to play in the post. He missed a ton of shots around the basket this past season because guys are more athletic than him and just flat out longer. Still he has a fantastic basketball I.Q., plays extremely hard, does have some perimeter skill and would have continued to develop but there were some labeling him the best player brought in during the Horn era and I did not see that.

Harris is the type of big man that South Carolina has to land. The bottom line is that very rarely, even with Frank Martin will the Gamecocks land an elite big man that can contribute right away. Harris just needed time from his senior year of high school to develop and he was heading in the right direction fairly quickly.

It would have been interesting to see Harris with Murphy Holloway alongside him and Bruce Ellington as a full time point guard this past season. I think he would have received even more attention because he would have really been able to focus on rebounding and defense and would have been the fourth scoring option.

Both are good players and the type of players needed to compete in the SEC and i would have been interested to see them play for Frank Martin. I think both would have really excelled.

  • To me, Gill had a lot of upside, but sort of trailed off as the season went on. Considering he transferred and likely would have anyway, you have to wonder about his commitment. I think there is a reasonable chance he is an all conference player at some point and he will be a solid starter if not. I'm not sure you can really gauge him too much by what he did as a true freshman on a bad team with no real offensive cohesion, especially after he checked out. He shot a good percentage from the arc, showed an ability to put it on the floor and pass it, but not much of a post game.

Harris to me will be an all conference player and perhaps a candidate for defensive player of the year when he is elgible, subject to whatever lottery picks Calipari brings in. His development seemed to be accelerating as the year went on. With a transfer year to work on his offense, he might be a really good player next time we see him. That to me was the question -- whether he would ever do much offensively.

If not, he is going to get you 10-12 points off of putbacks and dunks, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, IMO.

  • With KJ off the summer circuit due to his injury, is he in Columbia visiting his mother?

Has he shown up at USC at all?

No he has not visited. He took a few other visits but not to South Carolina. The staff has really not focused on 2013 as much as you would think due to having to deal with academic issues with Hall and Phillip to get them in and then making sure they aren't missing any other good available 2012's. I expect the 2013 recruiting to really pick up this month as they now are able to move forward.

I think Matt is a good player. I always felt that when South Carolina offered him a year ago he should have jumped on it because I was not sure how many more high major offers he is going to land. I think he is a big time athlete who is still developing as a true basketball player and will continue to do so with his best day in front of him. Much like I thought with Jordan Roper, I think it would be wise for Matt to go to a Mid-Major or Mid-Major plus type school in order to play right away. I think at that level he would be a four year contributor while being a three year starter.

Stanford and Virginia Tech are the two high majors showing the most interest. The Gamecocks have him on their board however he is down the list and they would have to miss on several players in order to offer him. At this point in time he is not a player I am tracking as far as South Carolina.

It will be interesting to see how they elect to play things. With the addition of Stroman, the point guard position is not as big a need now and from what I understand junior college point guard Chris Jones is likely to wait until the spring which works well for the Gamecocks as they can wait and see what they really have before making a decision.

Along with Jenkins I think it is likely they will sign either Thornwell or Williams and then a big man. If they need a point guard then you could add him to the list as well to make for a total of four players.

He has not committed yet. He may be waiting on clearance from some academics similar to what Hall and Phillip are doing right now.

  • How big is it, IYHO, if Hall qualifies? What kind of impact do you see him having, if any, on the program?

Is he a 2 in college?

Does USC have any kind of "elite" summer camp, similar to football's late July camp? If so, any big names expected to show up?

Does P.J. Dozier spend any time at USC, in pick-up games or the like? How well does he know Marcus Stroman?

It is pretty important that Hall qualifies. He would be one of the top scorers as soon as he set foot on campus and could make an offensive impact as a freshman.

Hall could play either the two or three depending on the line up.

Yes, South Carolina will have an elite camp later on. We are not releasing details of it right now but will have more on it later.

Dozier is not around USC as much as you would hope or like.He does know Stroman but I would not consider them overly close.

  • Hello WG! I had an opportunity this past Sunday to speak with Juwann Williams from Southside High in Greenville and he was telling me how South Carolina and Clemson are high on him. What do you think of him as a player and I know its early, but if offerred can South Carolina land him. BTW he was the best player on the court Sunday which included players such as DJ Brooks, Tre Smith, and former Hillcrest players that are playing college ball. The kid will be great! Thanks WG.
