I was having this discussion with a few folks today after the news about Jaylen Shaw and Duane Notice starting coming out....
Let's make some assumptions - we land 4/5 more kids for the 2013 class. Obviously that means there's a ton of turnover from this past year to next, and a handful of kids will be transferring out. I'm ok if that's the direction we go. But, looking ahead to next year - many believe that is the turnover happens this year, we could see several of our rising seniors heading out. That means that a limited number of schollies open up following the year. Stroman is already in the fold. That tightens your numbers even further. Unless..... you run off some more kids following next year.
It was pretty obvious that we waited until the back half of the year to decide we needed to recruit more kids. If you bring in 7, or even 8 kids, in this class, how long do you give them? Can we run off a guy or two after one year? I suppose you could. I'm not sure how that reflects on you among high school coaches, or if opposing coaches will use it against you? But, you either have to, or, you have to believe the guys you're targeting this late are going to be good enough to keep for several years.
How do you roll out of this situation and into a more stable one? Do we scramble until the young in-state kids begin to fill the roster? Or, is there a way to bring in this many, plus have open schollies for next years class? Surely we have to believe that we can really target 2 or 3 kids in the next class that can really help us out. There'd have been time to get on them early and build relationships.
This isn't supposed to be knock on the staff. Just curious if anyone has any thoughts on how we move into the 2014 class and beyond if we actually sign 7 or 8 kids in 2013?
Cut the two rising juniors plus slawson.
Still have smith, Richardson, Williams scholarship next year plus a Lithuanian or two.
Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.
Martin has had the kids for a year. At various times the doghouse was p[oulated by WIlliams, Leonard, Slawson & Richardson. Let's face facts. He went to starting a walkon the ;last few games because he could count on Steele to do what he was coached to do. The others apparently didn't get it or weren't interested in getting it.
I know this Martin can coach and recruit. If he needs more players to succeed why should we stand in the way of him getting them? Don't we want him to succeed?
