Live from Colonial Life Arena (FINAL: Elon 65 - USC 53)

  • Strong finish to the first half. Let's hope they keep it up for the second half.

  • On a brighter note, Brian Richardson looks to be expanding his game beyond simply a spot-up shooter. He's driven to the hole a few times already tonight, had six assists last game, and has had two or three pretty good plays on the defensive end of the floor. I'm not saying he's going to be All-SEC, but at the very least, he looks to be a better all-around player than last year.

  • We can still win this game. Just need to not turn the ball over and sink some shots.

  • At the 3:14 mark, South Carolina has 14 turnovers, they are 5-of-18 from the floor (28 percent) and have just two assists.

Damien Leonard knockds down a three pointer for the Gamecocks first basket.

Leonard knocks down another three pointer.

At halftime, the Gamecocks are 8-of-23 from the floor, 4-of-7 from three point range and have 14 turnovers.

Elon is 14-of-33 from the floor and only has five turnovers.

    31-23 Phoenix.

  • "We'll come back and beat this team, but we have to play better."

Wow! Someone needs to tell them the mics are on.

    Roisin Dubh

  • South Carolina again, at least through the first 20 minutes with more three pointers than free throws. They have tried seven shots from three point range and just four free throws.

They have to attack more in the second half and create some pressure on the Phoenix defense.

  • Martin trying to shake things up with a different starting line up for the second half. He goes with Eric Smith, Damien Leonard, Brian Richardson, Lakeem Jackson and Minda Kacinas.

Richardson answers with a three pointer to start the half.

At this point, Brenton Williams has played just six minutes and LaShay Page has played just seven minutes. Both have two turnovers but so does pretty much everyone else on the roster. Not sure what the deal with their playing time is.

At the 15:57 mark, Elon leads 39-33.

Looking at the box score I would assume it has to do with defensive liabilities and not keeping their man in front of them, i.e. Hamilton and Isenbarger...

  • Brenton Williams gets a steal and lay up, Phoenix lead down to four. LaShay Page back in with 14:58 to go in the game, again not sure wha Martin is upset with him about but he has only played seven minutes.

South Carolina looks awful tonight. There is no energy, no attempt to run an offense, no real changes by Martin and way to many three pointers.

Elon right now has all the energy and momentum. On top of that they have built an 11 point lead 46-35 with 12:37 to go. Eon drops a pull up jumper, lead has grown to 48-35 with 12:17 left to play and Martin calls a timeout.

  • It's astonishing how many layups we've missed tonight.

    Roisin Dubh

  • Eric simply can't guard the ball, he's getting blown by.

Page has been guarding Koch earlier in the game. Smith and Williams had been on Hamilton and Isenbarger.

Isn't it. Blame it on lack of skill. We need to recruit some players who can make layups. And some who can play defense. And some who don't turn it over. This is very disappointing.

  • To begin this season I thought for sure this team would be able to defend, I was flat out wrong. Can't guard the ball and Are pretty bad in a zone as well. Knowing FM's coaching style it has to be eating him alive

    Kyle4usc

  • If Lakeem Jackson is your leading scorer you are t going to win many. And that is not to slight LJ who has played far better than anyone else, he is just not a scorer.

    Kyle4usc

  • South Carolina looking lost on offense and defensively not getting back in transition or closing out on shooters.

With 7:20 to go, they trail 57-46.

Man when Jelsik goes negative it must be bad. You were NEVER this critical of Horn's teams

  • Elon up now 64-52 with 2:28 to go and they are on the foul line. Phoenix on a 8-0 run that is putting the game away.

Elon owns us....two in a row. I know it will get better in the future.....right now we suffer with no identity and no real talent. We cannot live from the outside because we do not have the personnel to do so. we cannot bang the ball inside as we do not have the personnel to do that either. Only option is up tempo, quick transition type and that is rendered useless if you come out with no energy. Hate to be these guys the next couple of days because Coach is going to run them hard I can guarantee you that.

  • That game sucked.

    Spurley

  • That was the worst we'll play under Martin, mark it down. That is as bad as we can possibly play. Doesn't make it any better, but it is. We are way better than that.

Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.

  • Martin should take every member of that team to the track and run them until someone quits. Defense is about want to.....and letting the players decide when and how much effort they will extend is a problem that has plagued us for years.

I do not mind losing so much as not giving full effort...seen too much over the years.
