Gamecocks in the pros

Dozens of former Gamecocks are playing professional baseball with a handful in the Major Leagues. Here’s a look at how they’re performing as well as how some of the current players are doing in summer league action.

Major League

James Darnell, San Diego Padres - In seven games this season, Darnell is hitting .235 with one home run, a double, and an RBI. His last game was May 17 and he was put on the 60-day disabled list.

Steve Pearce, Baltimore Orioles - Pearce is hitting .241 this season in 20 games with the Orioles. He has four doubles, two home runs, and seven RBIs playing nearly every day. He was 2-for-4 with a home run against the Angels on June 26.

Brian Roberts, Baltimore Orioles - Roberts was recently put on the 15-day DL with a groin strain. He missed the early part of the season with an injury and has only played in 15 games this season. He has 12 hits and five RBIs. Roberts was only hitting .182 at the time of his injury and had one hit over his final seven games.

Justin Smoak, Seattle Mariners - Smoak has a low batting average so far this season hitting only .204. In 74 games, he has only four doubles and 11 home runs while driving in 32 runs.

Minor Leagues

Jackie Bradley Jr., Double-A Portland - Red Sox - Rocketing through the Red Sox organization, Bradley Jr. has played 14 games in Double-A Portland and is hitting .345 with four doubles and seven RBIs. During his minor league season in 2012, which began with the Greenville Drive, Bradley Jr. is .356 with 30 doubles and 41 RBIs in 81 games. He was named a mid-season all-star in the Carolina League.

Billy Buckner, Triple-A Pawtucket - Red Sox - After starting the season in Double-A, Buckner was promoted to Pawtucket and has six starts for the Triple-A club. He has a 1-2 record with a 7.36 ERA in 29.1 innings pitched. His last start, on July 1, was one of his best throwing six shutout innings allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Jackie Bradley Jr.

Mike Cisco, Triple-A Lehigh Valley - Phillies - A reliever now, Cisco is 1-0 in two appearances with the Triple-A club. He also has a save to his credit totaling five innings. He’s allowed three hits in his two games while striking out two. During the 2012 minor league season, in which Cisco began in Double-A, the right-hander has a 0.96 ERA in 23 games and 46.2 innings.

Blake Cooper, Single-A Advanced Visalia - Diamondbacks - Now a reliever, Cooper has spent all season in Class-A advanced with the Diamondbacks and has pitched in 28 games. He has two saves in 33.2 innings pitched and a 2-5 record. Sporting a 3.48 earned run average, Cooper has walked 13 and struck out 36 while opponents hit .271 against him.

Justin Dalles, Single-A Advanced Frederick - Orioles - Dalles has spent the majority of the 2012 season in the Carolina League with Frederick and he’s currently hitting .245with seven doubles and two home runs in 30 games. Dalles has struggled a bit the past 10 games hitting only .135 with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Sam Dyson, Double-A New Hampshire - Blue Jays - Since moving up to Double-A, Dyson has become a relief pitcher and has a 0.75 ERA in 15 games. He has three saves in 24.0 innings and has allowed 19 hits and only two earned runs. Dyson has not given up a run in his last 10 games.

Bobby Haney, Single-A Advanced San Jose - Giants - Haney has spent the entire 2012 season with Single-A advanced San Jose and is hitting .336 with 11 doubles and nine RBIs in 33 games. Haney hasn’t hit as well lately going .263 in the last 10 games with nine strikeouts.

Bryan Harper, Single-A Short Season Auburn - Nationals Harper has pitched in four games this season and has a 15.43 earned run average. In 4.2 innings pitched, he’s allowed 14 hits and has two walks versus five strikeouts. He has not pitched since June 30.

Reese Havens, Double-A Binghamton - Mets - Knock on wood, Havens is healthy. He hasn’t put together his best season hitting just .207 in 56 games but he has been on the field, which is a step in the right direction. He has seven doubles and six home runs and 20 RBIs. He is turning it up hitting .297 with three home runs in the last 10 games.

Evan Marzilli, Rookie League, Missoula - Diamondbacks It was announced by the team on July 3 that Marzilli would begin his career with the Missoula Ospery, the Rookie League affiliate of the Diamondbacks

Whit Merrifield

Adam Matthews - Cincinnati Reds Matthews has not yet been officially assigned but is expected to go to Rookie League in Billings, Mt.

Whit Merrifield, Single-A Advanced Wilmington - Royals - Merrifield is currently in Class-A advanced with Wilmington and has been for the entire 2012 season. In 74 games, he’s hitting .271 with 14 doubles, three triples, and five home runs. Merrifield has performed well in his last 10 games hitting .308 with three RBIs and nine walks versus just two strikeouts.

Peter Mooney, Single-A Advanced Dunedin - Blue Jays - Mooney has not played this season and is currently on the 7-day DL.

Adrian Morales, Rookie League Burlington - Royals - Morales is hitting just .174 in Rookie League for Burlington. He’s played in seven games and has three RBIs. Morales has played a couple of games lately going 1-for-3 on both July 1 and July 2.

Steven Neff, Single-A Augusta - Giants - Now a reliever, Neff has appeared in 26 games and has a 1-1 record just up I-20 in Augusta, Ga. He has allowed 46 hits in 46.1 innings pitched and opponents are hitting .271 against him. Overall this season, he has a 3.30 ERA. In the last 10 games, Neff has a 2.66 ERA allowing 17 hits in 20.1 innings.

Landon Powell, Triple-A Oklahoma City - Astros - A former MLB player with Oakland, Powell has played all season with Oklahoma City in the Astros organization. He’s hitting .268 this season with three doubles, six home runs and 26 RBIs. Powell has slumped recently hitting just .176 over his last 10 games with nine strikeouts.

Matt Price - Orioles Price has signed with Baltimore but has not been officially assigned to a club.

John Taylor, Single-A Clinton - Mariners - Taylor has appeared in 24 games with Clinton and has a 1-4 record with a 4.80 earned run average. He has three saves in 30.0 innings pitched and opponents are hitting .288 against him. He has allowed an earned run in only three of his last 10 appearances with 10 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched.

Connor Bright

Steven Tollenson, Triple-A Norfolk - Orioles - Tolleson has bounced back and forth between the majors and minors since joining the Orioles organization. He’s been down in Triple-A since June 30 and still resides there as he waits on the call back to the Bigs. In his four games since being back down with Norfolk, he’s 4-for-12 with two RBIs.

Christian Walker, - Orioles Price has signed with Baltimore but has not been officially assigned to a club.

Scott Wingo, Single-A advanced Rancho Cucamonga - Dodgers - Wingo has played 67 games for the California League team hitting .225 with eight doubles, five triples, and two home runs. Wingo has 22 RBIs with 36 walks and 48 strikeouts. Wingo hasn’t had a multi-hit game in his last 10 games.

Summer baseball

Connor Bright - Coastal Plains League, Florence Redwolves Bright reported to the RedWolves on Tuesday and played his first game going 0-for-2 with two walks and a strikeout in his start at second base.

Seth Constable - Coastal Plains League, Thomasville Hi-Toms Constable, who redshirted, has played 16 games and started 13 with the Hi-Toms. Constable is hitting .163 with two RBIs. He has 11 strikeouts and four walks.

TJ Costen - Coastal Plains League, Thomasville Hi-Toms Costen reported to the Hi-Toms as soon as he returned from Omaha and has played in five games for the club. He is currently 4-for-20 with a triple and an RBIwith two walks and eight strikeouts. He has two errors and has played predominantly in the outfield.

Josh Knab - Coastal Plains League, Columbia Blowfish - Knab redshirted last season and will be a junior again in 2013. He has 10 appearances and sports a 3.78 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched. Knab has two saves and has 19 strikeouts and only three walks.

Kyle Martin - Coastal Plains League, Florence Redwolves Martin is just three games into his season and is 2-for-10 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. He has two strikeouts and three walks and has been playing first base.

Erik Payne - Coastal Plains League, Columbia Blowfish Payne has only played in two games and is 2-for-7 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Payne has started one game at third base and another in left field.

Hunter Privette - Coastal Plains League, Forest City Owls - In just two appearances, Privette has not allowed a run in 5.0 innings. He has given up three hits and a walk and also has six strikeouts.

Graham Saiko - Coastal Plains League, Columbia Blowfish - A junior college transfer yet to see the field for the Gamecocks, Saiko is hitting .250 in 26 games. He has four doubles and a home run with 17 walks against 12 strikeouts. He has 16 errors and is fielding .887.

Joel Seddon - Coastal Plains League, Columbia Blowfish - Making his second appearance on Tuesday night, Seddon picked up his first loss in 4.0 innings pitched allowing three runs. In two appearances, he is 1-1 allowing three earned runs on seven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.

Drake Thomason - Coastal Plains League, Forest City Owls Thomason has been one of four starting pitchers for the Owls this season and has a 3-2 record and 4.05 earned run average. In 26.2 innings pitched, he has allowed 21 hits and 23 walks. He has 20 strikeouts and opponents are hitting only .206 against him.

Adam Westmoreland - Coastal Plains League, Forest City Owls Westmoreland joined the Owls on Tuesday and made his first appearance for the club. He allowed one earned run on one hit and two walks in one inning of work. He struck out two.
