Williams selects Gamecocks

Long-time South Carolina lean David Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) made his intentions known when he chose the Gamecocks over programs like Arizona State, Penn State and Miami during the second quarter of the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl on the NFL Network Friday night.

David Williams selected South Carolina at the Semper Fi Bowl Friday night.

The class of 2013 four-star running back, rated a 92 and ranked the No. 9 all-purpose back and No. 171 overall prospect in the country, picked up a garnet South Carolina hat and placed it on his head to signal his verbal commitment.

“It’s the opportunity I have (at South Carolina) and the coaching staff,” Williams said of the South Carolina program prior to the game.

South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus landed the talented back for the Gamecocks after making him a top priority throughout the process.

Williams unofficially visited South Carolina over the summer.

"I was just in love with the atmosphere down there and how serious the football was down there,” Williams said previously. “I have a great relationship with my recruiter and the running backs coach, and they have great running back tradition.”

Head coach Steve Spurrier and Mangus visited Williams at his school and home on December 11.

"It was great to have Coach Spurrier take time out to come visit me. We pretty much talked a few times over the phone," he said at the time. "So this visit was just like him getting to know my mom and family. We talked little football."

Williams, who measured in at 6-foot-1, 203 pounds recently, rushed 190 times for 1,804 yards and 22 touchdowns while rarely playing in the second half during his senior season. He averaged 9.5 yards per carry.

Williams officially visited Arizona State Sept. 8. Williams will officially visit South Carolina Jan. 18. He originally scheduled official visits to Penn State for Jan. 11 and Miami for Jan. 25 but says he'll no longer take those visits.

Williams is the 20th commitment to the Gamecocks' 2013 class.
